Julia Kristeva is a Bulgarian-French philosopher, literary critic, psychoanalyst, feminist, and, most recently, novelist, who has lived in France since the mid-1960s. She is now a professor at the University Paris Diderot. Kristeva is internationally known for her theoretical work in the fields of semiotics, linguistics, psychoanalysis, and feminism. She has written more than 30 books, including Revolution in Poetic Language, Powers of Horror, and Black Sun. Kristeva was born in Sliwen, Bulgaria, and studied at the University of Sofia before moving to France in 1966. She received her doctorate in 1969 from the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris. Kristeva has been a visiting professor at Columbia University, New York University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Toronto. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Académie française. Kristeva is married to the French philosopher Philippe Sollers and has two children. She is 80 years old.
