He has also written several books, including The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu and The Falcon Thief. Hammer attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. He then went on to earn a master's degree in international relations from the London School of Economics. Hammer began his career as a journalist in the early 1980s, working as a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
