Toll began his career in the film industry in the late 1970s, working as a camera assistant on films such as The Deer Hunter (1978) and Apocalypse Now (1979). He then moved up to become a cinematographer on films such as The River (1984) and The Natural (1984). Toll has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart. He was the cinematographer in 1987 for a Ben-Gay baseball-themed national television commercial shot in Anaheim Stadium in southern California, written and co-directed by Peter Hoffman, a creative director at the New York advertising agency Ally & Gargano. It was the first commercial to use a baseball team's human mascot – in this case a giant "bird" – as a star in a commercial.
