He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with a degree in business administration. Tecklenburg began his career in the private sector, working for several companies in the Charleston area. He then served as the Chief of Staff for the City of Charleston from 1989 to 1991. In 1991, he was elected to the Charleston City Council, where he served for two terms. In 2015, Tecklenburg was elected Mayor of Charleston. During his tenure, he has focused on improving the city's infrastructure, public safety, and economic development.
