John Sexton is an American academic and lawyer who served as the 15th President of New York University from 2002 to 2015. He was born on August 5, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. Sexton received his B.A. from Fordham University in 1974 and his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1977. He was a professor at New York University School of Law from 1981 to 2002, and was appointed Dean of the Law School in 1988. In 2002, Sexton was appointed President of New York University, and served in that role until 2015. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of NYU's global presence, with the opening of NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai. Sexton is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Philosophical Society. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
