John Renbourn is an English guitarist and songwriter who has been active in the music industry since the 1960s. He is best known for his work with the folk-rock group Pentangle, which he co-founded in 1967. He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with many other musicians. Renbourn was born in Marylebone, London, on 8 August 1944. He began playing guitar at the age of 14, and was heavily influenced by the blues and folk music of the time. He attended the Kingston College of Art, where he studied painting and sculpture. Renbourn's career began in the early 1960s, when he joined the folk group the Johnstons. He then went on to form the folk-rock group Pentangle with Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson, Terry Cox, and Bert Jansch. The group released several albums and toured extensively throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. Renbourn has also released several solo albums, including The Lady and the Unicorn (1970), Sir John Alot of Merrie Englandes Musyk Thyng & Ye Grene Knyghte (1971), and The Enchanted Garden (1975). He has also collaborated with many other musicians, including Stefan Grossman, John Martyn, and Ralph McTell. Renbourn has been awarded several honors for his work, including the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He was also inducted into the Folk Alliance Hall of Fame in 2008.
