John Paul Stevens is a retired American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1975 to 2010. He was nominated by President Gerald Ford to replace Justice William O. Douglas, and was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 17, 1975. Stevens was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 20, 1920. He attended the University of Chicago Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1947. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy during World War II, and then returned to Chicago to practice law. In 1970, Stevens was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit by President Richard Nixon. In 1975, President Gerald Ford nominated him to the Supreme Court to replace Justice William O. Douglas. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 17, 1975. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Stevens wrote several landmark opinions, including the majority opinion in the landmark case of United States v. Nixon, which held that President Richard Nixon had to comply with a subpoena from the special prosecutor in the Watergate scandal. He also wrote the majority opinion in the landmark case of Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down a Texas law criminalizing homosexual sodomy. John Paul Stevens retired from the Supreme Court in 2010, at the age of 90. He is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. He has written several books, including Five Chiefs: A Supreme Court Memoir, which was published in 2011. As of 2021, John Paul Stevens's net worth is estimated to be roughly $5 million.
