John Madden is an English film and television director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work on the films Shakespeare in Love (1998), Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011). Madden was born on 8 April 1949 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. He attended the University of Cambridge, where he studied English literature. After graduating, he worked as a theatre director in London before moving into television and film. Madden's first feature film was The Debt Collector (1999). He has since directed a number of films, including Proof (2005), Killshot (2008), and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015). He has also directed episodes of the television series House of Cards (2013–2018) and The Night Manager (2016). Madden has been nominated for numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Picture for Shakespeare in Love, a BAFTA Award for Best British Film for The Debt Collector, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for House of Cards.
