He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978 with a degree in journalism. Kass began his career as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune in 1981. He was promoted to the editorial board in 1989 and has been a columnist since 1997. He is known for his conservative views and his columns often focus on politics, culture, and the city of Chicago. Kass has won numerous awards for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2008. He is also a member of the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame. Kass married Betty Castela in Oak Lawn's St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in 1986. They have twin sons, Stavros 1 and 2. Kass lives in the southwest suburb of Western Springs.

His Tribune biography reports Kass as the son of a Greek immigrant grocer. Kass was born on the South Side of Chicago, and grew up there and in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn. He graduated from Harold L. Richards High School in the class of 1974, and was a member of the varsity football team and the yearbook staff. He studied film at Columbia College in Chicago and worked in the student newspaper there but he never graduated.
