John Forsythe was an American actor and producer who had a successful career in film, television, and stage. He was best known for his role as the unseen millionaire Charles Townsend in the 1970s television series Charlie's Angels. He also starred in the television series Dynasty, for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama in 1981.
Forsythe was born in Penn's Grove, New Jersey, on January 29, 1918. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied drama and graduated in 1940. He then moved to New York City to pursue an acting career.
Forsythe made his Broadway debut in 1941 in the play The Male Animal. He went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions, including the musicals Kiss Me, Kate and The Pajama Game. He also appeared in several films, including Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry and The Naked Spur.

John Forsythe died on April 1, 2010, six days before his Dynasty (1981) co-star Christopher Cazenove. Forsythe had been diagnosed and treated for colorectal cancer in 2006; he was considered to be in remission at the time of his death. His two siblings both died from what were believed to be smoking-related cancers. His third wife, Nicole Carter, died on May 11, 2010, just five weeks after Forsythe. He was interred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Santa Barbara, California. Forsythe was survived by three children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
After he provided his voice in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003), he retired from acting at age 85.
