John Chowning is an American composer, inventor, and professor emeritus at Stanford University. He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of computer music and digital audio technology. He was born on August 22, 1934 in Salem, New Jersey. Chowning earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of Miami in 1956 and a Master of Science degree in music composition from Stanford University in 1962. He then joined the faculty of Stanford University in 1966, where he taught until his retirement in 1995. Chowning is credited with inventing the frequency modulation (FM) synthesis technique, which is used to create sound in many electronic instruments and computer music programs. He also developed the Stanford Digital Synthesizer, which was the first computer-controlled digital synthesizer. Chowning has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Technical Grammy Award, and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
