John Betjeman was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who was known for his humorous and nostalgic verse. He was born in Hampstead, London, on 28 August 1906, to Ernest Betjemann, a furniture maker, and his wife, Mabel. He was educated at Marlborough College and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read Modern History. Betjeman's first book of poetry, Mount Zion, was published in 1931. He went on to write several more volumes of poetry, as well as books of prose and travel writing. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1972, and was knighted in 1969. Betjeman was a popular figure in British culture, appearing on television and radio, and writing for newspapers and magazines. He was also a passionate advocate for the preservation of historic buildings, and was instrumental in saving several from demolition. Betjeman died on 19 May 1984, aged 77. His estate was valued at £1.2 million.
