John Bellairs was an American author of children's and young adult fiction. He wrote a total of 18 books, most of which were set in the fictional town of New Zebedee, Michigan. His most famous work is The House with a Clock in Its Walls (1973), which was adapted into a 2018 film starring Jack Black. Bellairs was born in Marshall, Michigan, and attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1960. He then went on to earn a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago in 1962. Bellairs began writing in the late 1960s, and his first book, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, was published in 1973. The book was a success, and it was followed by a series of sequels. He also wrote a number of other books, including The Face in the Frost (1969), The Figure in the Shadows (1975), and The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring (1976).
