He is a retired professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers. He was drafted in the first round, 15th overall, by the Flames in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft. Barrett played in the NHL for 11 seasons, from 1978 to 1989. He scored a total of 101 goals and added 135 assists for 236 points in 545 career games. He also played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) for the Edmonton Oilers and the American Hockey League (AHL) for the New Haven Nighthawks.
