Joe Hassett is an American basketball coach and former player. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and attended La Salle Academy. He played college basketball at Providence College, where he was a two-time All-American and the school's all-time leading scorer. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the 1977 NBA Draft, but never played in the NBA. Hassett began his coaching career as an assistant at Providence College in 1979. He then served as an assistant at the University of Rhode Island from 1981 to 1983. In 1983, he was hired as the head coach of the University of Rhode Island, where he coached for four seasons. He then served as an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut from 1987 to 1989. In 1989, Hassett was hired as the head coach of the University of South Florida, where he coached for four seasons. He then served as an assistant coach at the University of Virginia from 1993 to 1995. In 1995, he was hired as the head coach of the University of Rhode Island, where he coached for four seasons. Hassett has also served as an assistant coach for the NBA's New Jersey Nets and the WNBA's New York Liberty. He is currently an assistant coach for the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.
