JoAnne Akalaitis is an American director, writer, and theater artist. She is best known for her work in the theater, particularly her productions of the plays of Samuel Beckett and her collaborations with the avant-garde theater company Mabou Mines. She has also directed operas, films, and television shows. Akalaitis was born in Cicero, Illinois, and grew up in the Chicago area. She attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she studied theater and art. After graduating in 1959, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater. Akalaitis began her career as an assistant director at the New York Shakespeare Festival, where she worked with Joseph Papp. She then joined the avant-garde theater company Mabou Mines, where she worked as a director and writer. She directed several of their productions, including the critically acclaimed production of Samuel Beckett's Endgame. In the 1980s, Akalaitis began directing operas, including productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Wagner's The Flying Dutchman. She also directed several films, including the feature film The Mambo Kings (1992). In the 1990s, Akalaitis returned to the theater, directing productions of plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Ibsen. She also directed several television shows, including the HBO series Oz. Akalaitis has won numerous awards for her work, including a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for her production of The Skriker in 1996. She has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Grant, Edwin Booth Award, Rosamund Gilder Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre, and a Pew Charitable Trust's National Artist Residency Program Grant.
