Jim Varney was an American actor, comedian, and writer best known for his portrayal of the character Ernest P. Worrell in a series of television commercials, television shows, and feature films. He began his career as a stand-up comedian and later starred in the television series Hey Vern, It's Ernest! and the films Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, and Ernest Goes to Jail. Varney was born in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of Nancy Louise (née Howard) and James Albert Varney Sr. He had two siblings, David and Lisa. Varney attended Lafayette High School in Lexington and later attended the University of Kentucky. Varney began his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s, performing in clubs and on television. He made his film debut in the 1979 comedy film, The Apple Dumpling Gang. He went on to star in a series of television commercials as the character Ernest P. Worrell, which led to his own television series, Hey Vern, It's Ernest! in 1988. He also starred in a number of feature films, including Ernest Goes to Camp (1987), Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), Ernest Goes to Jail (1990), and Ernest Scared Stupid (1991). Varney was married to Jane Varney from 1975 until his death in 2000. He died of lung cancer at the age of 50 in White House, Tennessee.
