Traynor began his career as a journalist, working for the Daily Record and Sunday Mail. He then moved to the Scottish Sun, where he was the paper's chief football writer. He was also a regular contributor to BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme. In 2011, Traynor was appointed as the Director of Communications at Rangers Football Club.
