She began her career as a journalist in the 1950s, writing for the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Times. She was a columnist for the Guardian from 1972 to 1997, and wrote several books, including the autobiographical The Best of Times (1985). She was awarded an OBE in 1997 for her services to journalism. Tweedie was known for her wit and her ability to write about difficult topics with sensitivity. She wrote about her own struggles with depression, and was an advocate for mental health awareness. She was also a passionate feminist, and wrote about the challenges faced by women in the workplace. Tweedie died in 2001 at the age of 69. She is remembered as one of the most influential journalists of her time.
