Jill Saward is a British campaigner and author who has become a prominent figure in the fight against sexual violence. She is best known for her work in the aftermath of the Ealing Vicarage rape case in 1986, which she survived. Saward was born in Tooting, London, on 9 December 1953. She was educated at the University of York, where she studied English and History. After graduating, she worked as a teacher and then as a youth worker. In 1986, Saward was raped during a burglary at her family home in Ealing, London. The case became known as the Ealing Vicarage rape case and was the first in the UK in which a victim of rape was allowed to be named in the media. Saward waived her right to anonymity and spoke out about her experience in order to raise awareness of the issue of sexual violence. In the aftermath of the case, Saward became a prominent campaigner for victims of sexual violence. She wrote a book about her experience, titled Rape: My Story, and has since written several other books on the subject. She has also appeared on television and radio programmes to discuss her experience and the issue of sexual violence. Saward has been awarded an MBE for her work in raising awareness of sexual violence. She is currently a trustee of the Eaves charity, which works to prevent violence against women and girls.
