Jewell Parker Rhodes is an American novelist, professor, and playwright. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1954. She is the author of several novels, including Voodoo Dreams, Magic City, and Ninth Ward. She is also the author of the young adult novel Ghost Boys, which won the 2019 Coretta Scott King Award. Rhodes is a professor at Arizona State University, where she teaches creative writing and African American literature. She is also the founder and director of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. Rhodes has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the American Book Award, the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award, and the Lillian Smith Book Award.
