Jeff Shaara is an American novelist and the New York Times bestselling author of historical fiction. He was born on February 21, 1952 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Shaara. Shaara attended Florida State University, where he earned a degree in Criminology. He then worked as a police officer in Tallahassee, Florida, before becoming a full-time writer. Shaara's first novel, Gods and Generals, was published in 1996 and was a New York Times bestseller. It was followed by The Last Full Measure in 1998 and The Killer Angels in 2000. His other works include The Glorious Cause, Rise to Rebellion, To the Last Man, and The Rising Tide. Shaara has won numerous awards for his work, including the American Library Association's Best Book for Young Adults Award for The Killer Angels, the National Endowment for the Arts Award for The Glorious Cause, and the American Library Association's Notable Book Award for Rise to Rebellion. Shaara has received the W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction from the American Library Association in 2018 for The Frozen Hours, in 2005 for To The Last Man: A Novel of The First World War, and in 1997 for Gods and Generals. The American Library Association's Reference and Users Services Association recognized The Steel Wave as a 2009 Notable Book.

2011

He completed a trilogy in 2010 about World War II in the European and North African theaters. A fourth World War II novel, titled The Final Storm, covers the end of the war in the Pacific, and was released on May 17, 2011.

He has also been awarded the Lincoln Forum's "Richard Nelson Current Award", New York Civil War Round Table's "Bell I. Wiley Award", and Florida State University's "Artes Award" as a Distinguished Alumnus. In 2011, Shaara was inducted into the FSU College of Criminology Hall of Fame and awarded FSU's first annual Distinguished Writer's Award.
