Mélenchon was born in Tangier, Morocco, to a French father and a Spanish mother. He studied law at the University of Paris and was a professor of law at the University of Nanterre. Mélenchon was the presidential candidate of the Left Front in the 2012 French presidential election, coming in fourth place with 11.1% of the vote. Mélenchon is a vocal critic of neoliberalism and austerity policies, and has been a strong advocate for environmental protection and social justice.
