She was born in Sheffield, England, and attended the University of Sheffield, where she studied English and Drama. Jayne began her career in journalism in the early 1980s, working as a reporter for BBC Radio Sheffield. She then moved to BBC Radio 2, where she presented the breakfast show for two years. In 1984, she joined the BBC's Breakfast Time, where she presented the news and current affairs. She also presented the BBC's Newsnight programme for a number of years. In the 1990s, Jayne moved to ITV, where she presented the breakfast show GMTV. She also presented the ITV News at Ten and the ITV News at Five. She has also presented a number of documentaries for ITV, including The Real Diana and The Real Princess Diana. Jayne is currently a presenter on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
