Janet Young is an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Victoria from 1975 to 1996. She was the first woman to serve as a Cabinet Minister in the Australian Government, and the first woman to serve as a Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate. Young was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 22 October 1951. She attended the University of Melbourne, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. Young was elected to the Senate in 1975, and served as a Senator for Victoria until 1996. She was appointed Minister for Education in the Hawke Government in 1983, and was the first woman to serve as a Cabinet Minister in the Australian Government. She was also the first woman to serve as a Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate. Young was a strong advocate for women's rights, and was instrumental in the passage of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984. She also served as the Minister for Employment, Education and Training from 1987 to 1993. Young retired from politics in 1996, and has since served on a number of boards and committees. She is currently a director of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a member of the Council of the University of Melbourne. Young has been married to her husband, John, since 1975, and they have two children. She is a keen gardener, and enjoys reading and travelling.
