Jan Terlouw is a Dutch author and politician. He was born on 15 November 1931 in Kamperveen, Overijssel, Netherlands. He is best known for his children's books, such as Oorlogswinter (Winter of War) and De zevensprong (The Seven-Legged Race). Terlouw studied physics at Utrecht University and worked as a researcher at the Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium (Philips Natural Laboratory) in Eindhoven. He was a member of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) from 1971 to 1986 and served as a Member of Parliament from 1973 to 1977. Terlouw has written more than 30 books, including novels, short stories, and non-fiction. His books have been translated into more than 20 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. He has won numerous awards, including the Gouden Griffel (Golden Pen) in 1975 for Oorlogswinter and the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1988.
