James Joyce was an Irish novelist, poet, and playwright who is widely considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its highly controversial content. He also wrote the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882 and was educated at Jesuit schools. He left Ireland in 1904 and spent most of his adult life in continental Europe, primarily in Trieste, Paris, and Zurich. He returned to Ireland in 1912 and wrote Ulysses there. Joyce's works are noted for their innovative use of language and their exploration of the human condition. He is considered one of the most important modernist writers and is often cited as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. He died in Zurich in 1941.

His only son Giorgio, and Helen Fleischmann Kastor had a son Stephen James Joyce born in Paris 15 February 1932 and died 23 January 2020 on Île de Ré , Charente-Maritime, France. He was his grandfather's persnickety literary executor and had worked before for the OECD . He was married to Solange Raythchine.

He also met Nora Barnacle, a chambermaid, and on 16 June 1904 they went walking at Ringsend, at the Liffey's mouth; Joyce later chose that date for the events recorded in Ulysses. Having briefly shared a Martello tower at Sandycove, County Dublin, with Oliver St.

John Gogarty, he sailed from Dublin with Nora in October 1904. Joyce found work in a language school in Trieste.

1902

Joyce graduated from University College Dublin (UCD), in 1902. He briefly studied medicine in Paris but his mother's impending death from cancer brought him back to Dublin.
