He has also written several short stories and non-fiction works. Macdonald was born in White Plains, New York, and grew up in the nearby town of Scarsdale. He attended the University of Rochester, where he earned a degree in English literature. After college, he worked as a technical writer and editor for a number of companies, including IBM and AT&T. Macdonald began writing fiction in the late 1970s, and his first novel, The Sword of Knowledge, was published in 1981. The series was a success, and Macdonald went on to write several more novels in the same world. He also wrote a number of mystery novels, including The Big U, which was nominated for an Edgar Award. Macdonald has also written several short stories, which have been published in various magazines and anthologies. He has also written non-fiction works, including a book about the history of the fantasy genre, and a book about the history of science fiction.
