James Baldwin was an American novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, and civil rights activist. He was born in Harlem, New York City, and is best known for his works exploring racial and sexual identity. His works include Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953), Notes of a Native Son (1955), and The Fire Next Time (1963). He was also a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, and was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. Baldwin was born on August 2, 1924, to Emma Berdis Jones and David Baldwin. He was the eldest of nine children. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, and later attended the New School for Social Research. Baldwin's writing career began in 1948, when he published his first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain. He went on to write several more novels, including Giovanni's Room (1956), Another Country (1962), and Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone (1968). He also wrote several plays, including Blues for Mister Charlie (1964) and The Amen Corner (1965). Baldwin's essays, which often explored the complexities of race and sexuality, were collected in several volumes, including Notes of a Native Son (1955), Nobody Knows My Name (1961), and The Fire Next Time (1963). Baldwin was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, and was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. He was also a vocal critic of the Vietnam War. Baldwin died on December 1, 1987, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. He was 63 years old.
