James Algar was an American film director, producer, and writer. He was born on June 11, 1912 in Modesto, California. He was best known for his work on the Walt Disney anthology television series, which he directed from 1954 to 1960. He also directed several of the True-Life Adventure nature documentaries, including The Living Desert (1953) and The Vanishing Prairie (1954). Algar began his career at the Walt Disney Studios in 1934, working as an assistant animator on the Silly Symphonies series. He eventually moved up to directing, and his first film was The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1940). He went on to direct several other shorts, including The Reluctant Dragon (1941) and The Three Caballeros (1944). Algar was also a producer and writer on several Disney films, including The Parent Trap (1961) and The Sword in the Stone (1963). He was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the True-Life Adventure short, The Living Desert. Algar retired from the Disney Studios in 1973. He died on February 26, 1998 in Los Angeles, California. He was 85 years old.
