Jacqueline Cochran was an American aviator who was the first woman to break the sound barrier. She was born on May 11, 1906, in Muscogee, Cantonment, Florida. She was the daughter of a sharecropper and had no formal education. At the age of 15, she left home and moved to New York City, where she worked as a manicurist and beautician. She eventually opened her own beauty salon and became a successful businesswoman. In 1932, she met Floyd Bostwick Odlum, a millionaire businessman, and the two married in 1936. Odlum encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a pilot, and she soon earned her pilot's license. In 1941, Cochran became the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the first woman to fly a jet aircraft and the first woman to break the sound barrier. Cochran was a pioneer in the field of aviation and was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. She was also the first woman to be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Cochran died on August 9, 1980, at the age of 74. She was survived by her husband, Floyd Bostwick Odlum, and their two children.
