Jackson Diehl is an American journalist and columnist who has been writing for The Washington Post since 1983. He is currently the deputy editorial page editor of the newspaper. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1956. Diehl graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978 with a degree in journalism. He then worked as a reporter for the Austin American-Statesman before joining The Washington Post in 1983. At The Washington Post, Diehl has written extensively on foreign affairs, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab Spring, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has also written about domestic politics, including the 2008 presidential election and the Obama administration. Diehl has won numerous awards for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2005. He has also been a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a visiting professor at the University of Maryland. As an editor and columnist, Diehl advocated the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and the Post' s early tenor of approval for the war has been attributed to his influence. Diehl has advocated democratic reforms and a tougher U.S. policy toward Egypt and other autocracies and has criticized Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution. This has made his opinion criticized by the progressive media watchdog Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting for the fourth time regarding his opinions.

1992

He was foreign editor and assistant managing editor for foreign news from 1992 to 1999, and oversaw the expansion of The Washington Post' s foreign staff. In 1999, he became assistant managing editor for national news and oversaw coverage of the 2000 presidential election campaign.

1984

Diehl received Inter-American Press Association Award for Interpretive Journalism in 1984 for his coverage of South America, and the Bob Considine Award of the Overseas Press Association in 1990 for his coverage of the 1989 revolution in Eastern Europe. He was named a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing for his commentary on Egypt, and was again a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2013 for editorials about Syria.[2] In 2014 he was presented with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit by the government of Poland for "outstanding contribution to the support of democratic changes in Poland."
