Isobelle Carmody is an Australian novelist and children's writer. She is best known for her fantasy series, The Obernewtyn Chronicles, which has sold over a million copies worldwide. She has also written several other books, including the award-winning The Gathering and the picture book The Red Wind. Carmody was born in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia, on 16 June 1958. She grew up in Melbourne and attended the University of Melbourne, where she studied English and philosophy. Carmody began writing at the age of eight, and her first book, The Gathering, was published in 1988. It won the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award in 1989. Her other works include the Obernewtyn Chronicles, the picture book The Red Wind, and the short story collection Greylands. Carmody has also written several books for adults, including the novel The Last Mile Home and the short story collection The View from the Mirror. She has also written several plays, including The Winter Child and The Silver Horse. Carmody has won numerous awards for her writing, including the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award, the Aurealis Award, and the Victorian Premier's Literary Award. Isobelle Carmody was born in Wangaratta on 16 June 1958, the eldest of eight children. She began work on Obernewtyn Chronicles at the age of fourteen. This was soon after the death of her father in a traffic accident. She continued to work on them while completing a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in literature and philosophy; she worked in public relations and journalism.
