Iron Eyes Cody was an American actor best known for his role as "The Crying Indian" in the 1971 public service announcement (PSA) from the Keep America Beautiful campaign. He was born on April 3, 1907 in Gueydan, Louisiana, USA. He was of Sicilian and Cherokee descent. Cody began his career in the 1930s, appearing in a number of westerns and other films. He was a stuntman and bit player in many films, including The Ten Commandments (1956), The Alamo (1960), and A Man Called Horse (1970). In 1971, Cody starred in the iconic PSA for Keep America Beautiful, which featured him as a Native American shedding a single tear as he witnessed the destruction of the environment. The PSA was a huge success and made Cody a household name. Cody continued to act in films and television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in such films as The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), The Grey Fox (1982), and The Outsiders (1983). He also appeared in the television series The A-Team (1983-1987). Cody died on January 4, 1999 in Los Angeles, California, USA. He was 91 years old.

Cody's Native American heritage was challenged on May 26, 1996, in the New Orleans Times-Picayune (Louisiana, USA) newspaper by reporter Angela Aleiss who revealed that he was in fact of Italian ancestry. Cody denied his Louisiana origins.

Iron Eyes Cody was born Espera or "Oscar" DeCorti, the son of two first-generation immigrants from Italy. In 1924 he moved to California, changed his name from "DeCorti" to "Corti" to Cody, and started working as an actor, presenting himself as a Native American. He married an Indian woman, Bertha Parker, and together they adopted two Indian sons, Robert and Arthur.
