Howard Armstrong was an American composer, musician, and actor. He was born in Dayton, Tennessee, and began playing the violin at the age of five. He went on to become a master of the instrument, playing in a variety of styles, including jazz, blues, and country. He was also a talented singer and songwriter. Armstrong's career began in the 1930s, when he joined the W.C. Handy Orchestra. He went on to perform with a variety of other bands, including the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra. He also recorded several albums as a solo artist. In addition to his musical career, Armstrong was also an actor. He appeared in several films, including The Sting, The Color Purple, and The Cotton Club. He also had a recurring role on the television series The Jeffersons. Armstrong died in 2003 at the age of 94. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2004.
