Hillel Kook was born in Lithuania, Russian Empire, on 24 July 1915. He was an actor and political activist who was best known for his role in the formation of the Bergson Group, a Zionist organization that sought to rescue Jews from the Holocaust. Kook was born into a Jewish family and was raised in a traditional religious environment. He studied at the University of Vilna and later at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was a member of the Revisionist Zionist movement and was active in the Betar youth movement. In 1940, Kook immigrated to the United States and changed his name to Peter Bergson. He formed the Bergson Group in 1943 and worked to raise awareness of the Holocaust and to pressure the U.S. government to take action. He also worked to bring Jewish refugees to the United States and to establish a Jewish state in Palestine. Kook continued to be active in the Zionist movement after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. He was a member of the Knesset from 1965 to 1969 and served as a minister in the government of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol. Kook died in Jerusalem on 24 July 2001 at the age of 86. He was buried in the Mount Herzl cemetery in Jerusalem.
