He played at club level for Batley Shamrocks, Castleford (Heritage № 145), Bramley, Batley (World War II guest), and Bradford Northern, as a wing, centre, prop, or second-row, i.e. number 2 or 5, 3 or 4, 8 or 10, or 11 or 12, during the era of contested scrums. Herbert Smith served with army during World War II, in 1944 he was selected for the R.L. Services XV, but was unable to play due to training for the Normandy landings.
