Herb Baumeister was an American serial killer who murdered at least 17 people in the mid-1990s. He was born in Butler-Tarkington, Indiana, on April 7, 1947. He was the son of a Lutheran minister and grew up in a strict religious household. Baumeister attended Butler University and graduated with a degree in psychology in 1969. He then went on to work in the family business, a chain of discount stores. He married his wife, Julie, in 1972 and the couple had three children. In the early 1990s, Baumeister began to frequent gay bars in Indianapolis and began to pick up male prostitutes. He would take them back to his home in Fox Hollow Farm, where he would strangle them and bury their bodies in the woods. He was eventually caught in 1996 after a man he had picked up escaped and reported him to the police. Baumeister was charged with 11 counts of murder and was due to stand trial in 1997.
