He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in economics. Thia began his career in the entertainment industry in the late 1970s, appearing in various television shows and films. He rose to fame in the 1990s with his role in the hit comedy series Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd. He has since appeared in numerous films and television series, including the films Money No Enough (1998) and I Not Stupid (2002). Thia is married to former actress and television host, Irene Ang.
