Henry H. Arnold was an American general who served as the Commanding General of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He was the first and only Air Force general to hold five-star rank. Arnold was born on June 25, 1886, in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1907 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Arnold served in the Army for the next 33 years, rising to the rank of major general in 1938. In 1941, he was appointed the Commanding General of the Army Air Forces, and in 1942 he was promoted to the five-star rank of General of the Army Air Forces. During World War II, Arnold was responsible for the expansion and modernization of the Army Air Forces, and he was instrumental in the development of the long-range bomber and the atomic bomb. After the war, he served as the first Chief of Staff of the newly created United States Air Force. Arnold retired from the Air Force in 1946 and died in 1950 at the age of 63. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1976.
