Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd was a South African politician who served as Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 to 1966. He was a major architect of apartheid, the system of racial segregation that was implemented in South Africa during his tenure. He was assassinated in 1966. Verwoerd was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1901. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Amsterdam, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy. He then taught at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Pretoria. In 1934, Verwoerd was elected to the South African Parliament as a member of the National Party. He served in various ministerial positions, including Minister of Native Affairs and Minister of Education. In 1958, he was elected Prime Minister of South Africa. As Prime Minister, Verwoerd implemented a number of policies that entrenched racial segregation in South Africa. He also sought to strengthen the country's economy and to promote Afrikaner nationalism. Verwoerd was assassinated in 1966 by Dimitri Tsafendas, a Greek-Mozambican man who had been denied entry into South Africa. Verwoerd's net worth is not publicly known.
