Helen Wills was an American tennis player who was active in the 1920s and 1930s. She was the first female athlete to be featured on the cover of Time magazine and was one of the most successful female tennis players of all time. She won 31 Grand Slam titles, including 19 singles titles, 8 doubles titles, and 4 mixed doubles titles. She was the first woman to win four consecutive Wimbledon singles titles and the first to win eight Grand Slam singles titles. She was also the first woman to win the U.S. Open singles title three times. Wills was born in Centerville, California, and began playing tennis at the age of seven. She quickly rose to prominence in the sport, winning her first tournament at the age of 11. She went on to win the U.S. Girls' Championship in 1923 and 1924, and the U.S. Women's Championship in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930. She also won the Wimbledon singles title in 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930. In addition to her success on the court, Wills was also a successful businesswoman. She founded the Helen Wills Tennis Academy in California and wrote several books on tennis. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1959. She died in 1998 at the age of 92.
