Helen Alexander is a British businesswoman and the former president of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). She was born on 10 February 1957 in Geneva, Switzerland. She was educated at the University of Oxford, where she studied modern history. Alexander began her career in the civil service, working in the Department of Trade and Industry and the Cabinet Office. She then moved into the private sector, working for the British American Tobacco Company and the British Airports Authority. In 2000, Alexander was appointed president of the CBI, a position she held until 2006. During her tenure, she was a vocal advocate for business and a strong supporter of the government's economic policies. Alexander has also served on the boards of several major companies, including the Royal Bank of Scotland, the London Stock Exchange, and the Financial Times. She is currently a non-executive director of the Bank of England. Alexander is a member of the House of Lords, where she sits as a crossbencher. She is also a trustee of the Tate Gallery and a patron of the Royal Academy of Arts. Alexander has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford and an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Art. She was a trustee of Sir Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web Foundation, and was chairman of the Port of London Authority from January 2010 until 31 December 2015. Since September 2011 she had been Chancellor of the University of Southampton, the first woman in that role. Her appointment at Southampton attracted some criticism from the student body over Alexander's role at Rolls-Royce, given the company's role in the arms trade.
