Hafez al-Assad was the President of Syria from 1971 to 2000. He was born into a poor family in the village of Qardaha in the Alawite Mountains of Syria. He was the fourth of five children. His father, Ali Sulayman al-Assad, was a peasant farmer and his mother, Anisa Makhlouf, was a housewife. Hafez al-Assad attended the Homs Military Academy and graduated in 1955. He then joined the Syrian Air Force and rose to the rank of colonel. In 1966, he was appointed commander of the Syrian Air Force. In 1970, Hafez al-Assad was appointed Prime Minister of Syria. In 1971, he was elected President of Syria. During his presidency, he implemented a number of economic and social reforms, including the nationalization of industry and the introduction of a new constitution. He also sought to strengthen Syria's ties with other Arab countries. Hafez al-Assad died on 10 June 2000 at the age of 69. He was succeeded by his son, Bashar al-Assad, who is the current President of Syria. Hafez al-Assad's net worth is estimated to be around $1.5 billion.
