Gus Kahn was a prolific songwriter and composer who wrote some of the most popular songs of the 20th century. He wrote over 800 songs, including "It Had to Be You," "Makin' Whoopee," "Dream a Little Dream of Me," and "Toot, Toot, Tootsie (Goo' Bye)." He was also a successful lyricist, writing the lyrics for such songs as "My Buddy," "I'll See You in My Dreams," and "Ain't We Got Fun." Kahn was born in Koblenz, Germany, and moved to the United States with his family when he was a young boy. He began writing songs while still in school, and by the time he was in his twenties, he had already written several hit songs. He went on to write for Broadway shows and Hollywood films, and his songs were recorded by some of the biggest stars of the day, including Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, and Louis Armstrong. Kahn was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, and he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He died in 1941 at the age of 54.

Lyricist, born in Germany, brought to the U.S. at the age of five. Educated in Chicago. Wrote songs for vaudeville and, subsequently, Broadway. Much of his film work was in collaboration with composers Sigmund Romberg, George Gershwin and Harry Warren. He was immortalised in a movie biopic, I'll See You in My Dreams (1951), portrayed by Danny Thomas.
