Grover Cleveland Alexander was an American professional baseball player. He played Major League Baseball as a pitcher from 1911 to 1930, for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938. Alexander was born in Elba, Nebraska, on February 26, 1887. He was the fifth of seven children born to William and Mary Alexander. He began playing baseball at a young age, and by the time he was 16, he was playing semi-professional baseball in Nebraska. Alexander made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1911. He quickly established himself as one of the best pitchers in the National League, leading the league in strikeouts in 1915 and 1916. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1917, and he helped the team win the World Series in 1918. Alexander was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1926, and he helped the team win the World Series in 1926 and 1931. He retired from baseball in 1930, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938. Alexander died on November 4, 1950, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was 63 years old.
