Gregory Orr is an American poet, essayist, and professor of English at the University of Virginia. He is the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, including Concerning the Book That Is the Body of the Beloved, The Caged Owl: New and Selected Poems, and The River of Lost Voices: Stories from the Holocaust. He has also written several books of nonfiction, including The Blessing: A Memoir and Poetry as Survival. Orr was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1954. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a B.A. in English in 1975. He went on to earn an M.A. in English from the University of Virginia in 1977 and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia in 1981. Orr has been a professor of English at the University of Virginia since 1981. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Iowa. Orr has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.
