Gregory Benford is an American science fiction author and professor of physics at the University of California, Irvine. He is best known for his novel Timescape, which won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1980. He has also written numerous short stories, essays, and articles, and has edited several anthologies. Benford was born in Mobile, Alabama, and grew up in East Texas. He received his B.S. in physics from the University of Oklahoma in 1963, and his Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of California, San Diego. He has been a professor of physics at the University of California, Irvine since 1971. Benford has written over 20 novels, including Timescape, The Martian Race, and the Galactic Center Saga. He has also written numerous short stories, essays, and articles, and has edited several anthologies. He has won numerous awards, including the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1980 for Timescape, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Novel in 1981 for The Martian Race, and the Lord Foundation Award for Best Novel in 1983 for In the Ocean of Night.
