He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and began his career as an actor in the 1960s. He then moved into directing, and his first feature film was the horror film The Omen (1976). Baker has been married twice, first to actress and singer Julie Dawn Cole, and then to actress and producer Joanna David. He has two children from his first marriage.
