Glenville Lovell is a Barbadian-born Canadian poet, novelist, and playwright. He was born in 1955 in Christ Church, Barbados, and moved to Canada in 1976. He is the author of several books of poetry, including The City of Dreadful Night (1987), The Burning Bush (1991), and The Book of Negroes (1995). He has also written two novels, The Confirmation (1998) and The Price of Memory (2002), and a play, The Last of the African Kings (2003). Lovell has received numerous awards for his work, including the Governor General's Award for Poetry in 1991, the Pat Lowther Award for Poetry in 1995, and the Harbourfront Festival Prize in 1998. He has also been a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Fiction in 1998 and the Trillium Book Award in 2002. Lovell currently lives in Toronto, Canada, and is a professor of English at York University. He is married and has two children.

Lovell's work as a playwright earned him the 2002 Frank Collymore Literary Award for the Barbados-based Mango Ripe! Mango Sweet!. Many of his novels and plays have represented Barbados at the Caribbean Festival of Arts.

Lovell was born in a Chattel house in Parish Land, Christ Church, Barbados and grew up around rich storytelling among the sugar cane workers. His first novel, Fire in the Canes was published in 1995 and was met with critical acclaim. So too was his second novel, Song of Night, published in 1998.
